Mary was the third of five children of Owen & Sarah (Owen) Davis. The family were members of the Baptist church. They spent the early years in Maryland (Franklin county) and by 1760 were in what is now Fayette county, Pennsylvania. Mary's mother died in 1762 when Mary was just seven years old.

By 1764 her father married Hannah James. Mary had twelve half siblings from this union.

Mary meet a young Morgan Jones who with his brother the patriotic Reverend Davis Jones in 1772 tomahawked their individual claims to land in what is now Marshall county, West Virginia.

Mary and Morgan married (by abt 1773). The couple moved onto their land in Grave Creek, West Virgina. They started their family of what would be eleven children.

While the land held much promise for settling it was located near the ancient burial Indian grounds of Moundsville. The old trails that cross the land were used by different Indian tribes. By 1777 conflict with the Indians was in full force. Morgan was an Ensign in the militia. The area settlers were suffering. The Jones family horses had been killed. Her father Owen sent a team of horses to bring Mary and her family back to Fayette county. All of the settlers abandoned the Moundsville area until after the Revolutionary War ended.

Mary, Morgan and a growing family remained in German twp of Fayette county until 1790 when the moved to Dunkard twp of Greene county, Pennsylvania. Their new land (305 acres) was midway between her Davis home in Fayette county and their Grave Creek land (1945 acres).

While Mary and Morgan apparently never moved back to Grave Creek several of their children did settle on the family land there.

Mary was a true pioneer woman who gave her family much love and care. Today we can only imagine what her day to day life was like and the challenges she faced raising her family.

Mary did not have the middle name of Elizabeth.

None of her father Owen's children from either wife are ever shown in any record at any time with a middle name.

Why bring this up? Well, there is one record that may appear to show one of the children with a middle name. In Owen's will where he was listing his daughters, it showed "Mary Elizabeth and Hannah". There was no comma between Mary Elizabeth. A comma should have been used between the names, Mary, Elizabeth ... Owen did have a daughter Elizabeth and her name is not shown elsewhere in the will.

The Davis Bible compilation done about a century after shows Elizabeth's death date as before 1803 when Owen wrote his will. No other original source shows this date. It is quite probable since the person compiling the Davis Bible info did not see Elizabeth elsewhere in Owen's 1803 will, he assumed she had died before the will was written. This is not the case.
