She was born in Gaston County, daughter of the late Major F. and Myrtle McAlister Abernathy, and was preceded in death by her husband Jerry C. Brooks, a daughter Carolyn Brooks, and two sisters, Marie and Pauline Abernathy.
She was a member of Community Baptist Church in Dallas, where she had taught Sunday School and was a member of the Young at Heart Group.
Survivors include two grandsons, Eddie Barrett and wife Joni of Gastonia, Jason Barrett of Gastonia, four great-grandchildren; her son-in-law, Lloyd Barrett of Gastonia; seven sisters, Helen Hager and husband Bob, Ruth Fraley, Elizabeth Abernathy, Martha Owenby and husband E.J., and Faye Pope and husband Howard all of Denver; Pansy Jonas and husband Floyd of Stanley, Sue Medlin of Newton; three brothers, Frank Abernathy and wife Linda of Lowell, Harold Abernathy of Denver, Wayne Abernathy and wife Linda of Maiden.
