ORPHA BATES, 77, of Kendallville died Thursday at home. The Kendallville native worked at McCray Hospital for 18 years and at Universal Friction and Flint Walling. Her husband, Beryl C., died in 1993. Surviving are sons, Frank Freed and Terry Smith, both of Kendallville, Dale Freed of Elkhart, and Jack Freed of Lafayette; a sister, Kathryn Luke of Fort Wayne; brothers, Roy Acker and Robert Acker, both of Auburn; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Berhalter-Hutchins Funeral Home. Calling is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday; burial in South Milford Cemetery, South Milford.
