Lt. Commander Chase graduated from the United States Naval Academy in the class of 1897. He was a Spanish American War, Philippine Insurrection and World War I Navy veteran. He saw sea duty on the USS Indiana (during the Spanish-American War), the USS Ozark, USS Culgoa, USS Guardoqui, USS Mallory R. Henry, and the USS General Alava. He was awarded the Sampson medal, the West Indies Campaign medal, the Philippine Campaign medal and the World War I Victory medal with Transport bar.
