Written in a letter by Ida Mae Jewell Stoneburner (William's daughter), dated 24 Nov 2000:

"My father William Jewell & Gertrude Stanley Jewell were married June 21, 1903 by Rev. Morgan Lewis. They had 12 children - William, Thomas, Catherine, Ralph, Helen, Darewood, Frank, Ida Mae, Louise, Louis, Lena, & Jack. He was a miner & worked in the local mines here in Glouster. He was an avid hunter, butcher, trapper, bee keeper, axe & pick handle maker. He had what they called a shaving horse, that you sat on to shave the lumber & shape it into handle forms which were sold to the miners for their picks to pick coal. I watched him making them many times. He had some cattle, farmed, & raised vegetables, which after harvest, he stored in mounds in the garden. Mounds were lined with leaves. Cabbage, turnips, carrots, & other vegetables were stored this way & heaped into a mound below frost level. When spring came they dug into the mounds for the vegetables. Other fruits & vegetables were canned & stored in a cellar. My dad died of a liver ailment, probably cancer."
