According to his Civil War records, John S. Jewell was born in Saratoga Co., NY. There is no conclusive evidence for John's actual date of birth. All records are conflicting. The closest I can come to estimating it correctly is 07 October 1814 (using his age at the time of his death).

He married Catharine Ann Wagner on 08 June 1848 in Athens Co., OH. They had at least eleven children, all born in OH:

- Laura Jane Jewell Applebee (1850-1936)
- Mary Jewell McGrath (1852-1905)
- Emma K. Jewell Shaner Hill (1854-1935)
- James B. Jewell (1854-1938)
- George W. Jewell (1859-1941)
- William Jewell Sr.(1861-1935)
- John Sherman Jewell (1866-1928)
- Anna M. Jewell Kinder (1867-1945)
- Etta C. Jewell Frazier (1870-1946)
- Charles Clarence Jewell (1873-1957)
- Amanda Jewell Stedman Williams (1876-1967)

John served as a private in Co. H, 63rd Reg., O.V.I. during the Civil War. He enlisted on 26 November 1861 and was mustered out on 23 July 1864. He received a pension for injuries sustained during his service. Those injuries plagued him until his death in 1898.
