After nearly two years of illness and suffering, Laura Jane Applebee, the oldest of 11 children of John and Catherine Jewell, died at her home in Maitland June 30, 1936. She was born Feb. 9, 1850, at Bishopville, Ohio, where she enjoyed the privileges and faced courageously the hardships of pioneer days.
She was married to John S. Applebee in Bishopville, Ohio, May 31, 1868. To them was born one child, Jennie A., who died in 1913. One foster child, William A. Richardson, Shannon City, Iowa, came as a lad of 6 years and enjoyed all the privileges of a Christian home until he was 21 years of age.
Her husband two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death, Mr. Applebee in 1917. John in 1926 and William in 1936; Mrs. Mary McGrath in 1905 and Mrs. Emma Hill in 1935. Those living: James, Charles, and Mrs. Amanda Williams, Glouster, Ohio; George, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Anna Kinder, Trimble, Ohio; Mrs. Etta Frazier, Logan , Ohio. There are two foster grandchildren, Wayne of Oregon, Mo., and Mrs. D. B. Sanderson, Little Rock, Ark.
Mr. and Mrs. Applebee came to Maitland in 1882. For six years they resided in Ponca City, Okla. In 1910 they returned to Maitland where they, and Mrs. Applebee, since the departure of her husband, had made her home.
In her youth, Mrs. Applebee became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Bishopville, Ohio; when she came to Maitland she brought her church letter with her. For several years she was a member of the United Brethern Church. Later she transferred her membership to the Methodist Episcopal Church of which she remained a faithful member to the end.
As a good wife and mother she was cherished and she had the respect of fiends and neighbors who, with the relatives, mourn her departure, at the age of 86 years, 4 months, and 18 days. Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 2, at the Methodist Church and burial was in the Maitland K. of P. Cemetery. The Rev. G. Woestemeyer, pastor, conducted the services.
