Fred E. Eberhardt, age 87, of 2022 Granger Road, Manitowoc, entered eternal life late Tuesday morning, September 27, 2011 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

Fred was born on August 10, 1924 on the home farm in the town of Newton, Manitowoc County. He was the son of the late Ernst and Martha Uttecht Eberhardt. Fred was a graduate of Lincoln High School with the class of 1942. On October 6, 1943 he entered active service with the United States Navy. After boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois, Fred attended Radioman School at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and was an International Morse Code graduate. He then was assigned to the 7th Fleet aboard the USS SC 648 submarine chaser. Fred served overseas during World War II in the South Pacific Theater for two years and was involved with the liberation of New Guinea, Philippine Islands and Borneo also liberating a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Borneo freeing civilians, nurses and service personnel. On March 17, 1946 Fred was honorably discharged from the Navy as Radioman Second Class, USNR and then continued his education at the University of Wisconsin and Chicago Technical College where he received his diploma in Plan Reading, Building Construction and Estimating. Fred worked with local contractors on commercial construction and as a building estimator with major projects in the city of Manitowoc and around the state of Wisconsin. Fred retired in 1985 and enjoyed traveling with his wife, bowling, golfing and playing cards. He married Beatrice Fenlon on July 17, 1948 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Maple Grove, WI. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the Manitowoc Kiwanis Golden K Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Otto Oas Post #659, and longtime member of the Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years: Beatrice; one son: Edward Eberhardt, Madison; one daughter: Amy (William) Dixon, Monona, WI; one granddaughter: Molli Eberhardt, Eau Claire, WI; one brother: William (Thelma) Eberhardt, Janesville, WI; two sisters: Irene Kolb, Madison, WI; Esther Halverson, Cato; sister-in-law: Lenora Eberhardt; nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Ernst and Martha Eberhardt; stepfather: Carl Waack; one son: Steven; two brothers: Herman and Henry Eberhardt; two sisters: Edna Fischer and Emma Roehl.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 30, 2011 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Waldo. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Richard Klingeisen with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Military rites will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Otto Oas Post #659. Relatives and friends may call at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Waldo on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m.
