WALTER K. HARTMAN

Walter K. Hartman, 63, of 5005 Sunset Road, Manitowoc, died last Thursday
evening, August 10, 1989 at Colony Oak Care Center, Appleton. Funeral services
will be 11 am Monday at First Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. Rev. Bruce W. Hanstedt
will officiate with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
Mr. Hartman was born March 10, 1926 at Oshkosh, son of the late George and Anna
Hanneman Hartman. He received his education in Oshkosh Public School System.
Mr. Hartman entered the United States Navy during World War II serving from
1944 to 1946. He continued his education at UW-Oshkosh receiving his BA Degree
in Education and then he continued at UW -Madison, receiving his Masters Degree
in Administration. In 1951 Mr. Hartman came to Manitowoc and taught elementary
education at McKinley Grade School from 1952 to 1963. He later became the first
Principal at James Monroe Elementary School from 1964 to 1973. He also was
Principal of Newton, Cleveland and Garfield Elementary Schools and Principal
at Benjamin Franklin Elementary School from 1978 until his retirement in 1986.
He married the former Doris Smith on August 6, 1976 at Waukegan, Illinois. Mr.
Hartman was a member of Manitowoc Golden Kiwanis Club, Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity,
lifetime member of National Education Association and Wisconsin Principals
Association and a member of First Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Doris; a step-son, Jeffrey Hoffman of Fresno, California;
a step daughter, Leslie Hoffman of Los Angeles, California; five brothers and three
sisters-in-law, William and Vivian Hartman of Oshkosh, Edward Hartman of Oshkosh,
Raymond and Lois Hartman of St. Charles, Illinois, Ralph and Rita Hartman of
Providence, Rhode Island, Albert Hartman of Carlsbad, California; three sisters and
two brothers-in-law, Helen and Herman Hoppe of Oshkosh, Lillian Hartman of Oshkosh,
Elaine and Leo Muza of Oshkosh, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends
survive. He was preceded in death by a sister.
Friends may call at Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, 5 pm to 9 pm Sunday and Monday
at the church from 10 am until the hour of service at 11 am. Memorials may be made
to Wisconsin Alzheimers Association.
