Our information shows John as the 2nd child of Josiah and Ruth M. Whitehead. Josiah was the third child of James Whitehead and Sarah Wood and he died abt 1831 in Cumberland Co. NJ. Ruth M. died 4 Dec 1880 in Remington , Benton Co., Indiana. Ruth married James Bennett 17 Dec 1832 after Josiah died.

By 1840 John had moved from New Jersey and was living with William and Esther* McCarty in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. He continued to live in Fairfield Township with William and Esther and later William and his 2nd wife, Catherine, until he moved to the Indiana Soldiers Home.

John served our country during the Civil War. He enlisted, with his nephew Martin Van Buren Whitehead, Aug. 18, 1862 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Indiana. John served in Co. L, 90th Regiment, 5th Indiana Cavalry. Sometime during his service he transferred to Co. D, 71st Regiment, 6th Cavalry. He was discharged Aug. 4, 1865 with the rank of PVT at Pulaski, Tennessee.

In researching John's life we find that he came to the Indiana Soldiers Home from Tippecanoe County on March 3, 1896. He died Feb. 15, 1899 and was buried at the base of the flagpole. Services were conducted by the Grand Army of the Republic. John bequeathed the cost of obtaining and erecting a cannon for the cemetery flag pole. The cannon was bronze cast in Spain in 1796 and used in a fort in Santiago, Cuba. It was seized by our troops in 1898 and taken to the New York Arsenal. From there it was obtained by the Home and used as the base for the flag pole, at the request of John. It was dedicated in July, 1990. Burial in the cemetery remains limited to residents of the Indiana Soldiers Home and their spouses/widows.
