Florence Shoemaker
Mrs. Florence Edna Domer Shoemaker was born in Hamlin, Kansas, March 29, 1879, the daughter of W.S. and Mary E. Domer. She departed this life at the Oak Ridge Acres Nursing Home in Hiawatha, Kansas on August 12, 1965.
When four years of age, she moved with her family to a farm near Centralia, and with the exception of a few years in Vermillion, Centralia has always been her home.
She attended school at Centralia and graduated from Emporia State Teacher's College in 1896. She taught several years in the Centralia schools.
She was married June 1902 , to Dr. W.S. Shoemaker. They made their home in Centralia until Dr. Shoemaker's death in 1937. To them were born eight daughters. Two daughters, Mary Louise and Jeanne, and her husband, Dr. Shoemaker, preceded her in death.
For the past fifteen years she had made her home and been cared for by her daughter, Wava Jane Allen and family. Mrs. Shoemaker had been a member of the Methodist Church for over 50 years. She was an active member of the Eastern Star for many years. Mrs. Shoemaker's main interest were home and family and outside living.
She leaves to mourn her passing six daughters: Violet E. Thomas, Brookfield, Illinois; Twila M. Fearing, Lawrence, Kansas; Hazel Newlin, Netawaka, Kansas; Ruth E. Curtin, Wetmore, Kansas; Wava Jane Allen, Centralia; and Jonny D. Sourk, Overland Park, Ks.; 13 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Centralia on Sunday, August 15 at 3:00 p.m. with burial in the Centralia Cemetery. Rev. Glenn Amend officiated. Mrs. Wm. Warren sang "When the Mist Rolls Away" and "In the Garden" accompanied by Mrs. Fern McClary. Casketbearers were Otto Polson, Art Myers, Earl Byrne, Morris McBratney, Raymond Colwell and Raymond Blair. Hayes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
