Daisy Belle Tubman was born 10 Feb 1891 on Parson's Hill near Leolyn, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Robert (1850-1904) and Eleanor Moore "Ellen" Campbell Tubman (1859-1922). Her father, an Irish immigrant, arrived in America at age 1, on 17 Jun 1851 aboard the Meridian; her mother, a native of England, arrived in America at age 9, on 26 Apr 1869 aboard the Tripoli. Daisy was the middle of 5 children, 4 girls, 1 boy.
Daisy attended a large, one-room schoolhouse atop Parson's Hill, which is still standing. At age 25, she married Leon J Matson, 5 years her junior, on 20 Dec 1916. They would raise 4 sons, all veterans of World War II:
