John was one of the early residents of Sagola, Michigan. According to his daughter, Marcella Long Bargo, John left his home in Sturgeon Bay, Door, Wisconsin, as teenager & hiked to Sagola about 1880. There were still many Indians that live in the area & John fell in love with one of the women. He hiked back to Wisconsin to get a pair of oxen for her dowry. They had 2 daughters, Addie & Marcella, before she left him.
On May 26, 1903, in Iron Mountain, Dickinson Co., Michigan, Addie VanDeussen/VanDussen & John Long were married. Addie, 24, the daughter of Morris VanDeussen had been living in Sagola. John, 37, a teamster. Justice of the Peace Rudolph Th. Miller officiated the wedding. Attendants were Ada VanDeussen & Grovey Elliott both of Sagola.

Amanda born March 7, 1904 & died Sept. 26, 1904; she died of cholera infantum and her remains were taken to Iron Mountain for burial.

Dan born July 11, 1912 & died Jan. 17, 1914.
John was a farm boss taking care of the Sagola Lumber Company's farm. He also contracted to build a wagon road from Sawyer Lake to Floodwood.
