Charles Grey (1764-1845) - Find a Grave Memorial

British Prime Minister. Known as the Viscount of Howick, (1806-07), he was the 2nd Earl of Grey and was the politician leader of the Whig Party. He received a conventional aristocratic education at Eton and Cambridge and was elected as a member of Parliament at age 22. He was one of the young Whig aristocrats who formed the Society of the Friends of the People, in 1792. He was in the House of Commons, (1786-1807), Foreign Minister, (1806-07) and in the House of Lords, (1807-30). He took his place as foreign secretary and leader of the Foxite Whigs, in 1806. In 1830, he was brought into office as British Prime Minister, serving two terms until 1834. While in office, crowning achievement was the epochmaking Reform Act of 1832. After leaving office as Prime Minister, he again in the House of Lords, (1835-35) and retired from politics until his death at age 81.
