DEATH OF LADY CAROLINE BARRINGTON. - We have to announce the death, at an early hour on Wednesday morning, of Lady Caroline Barrington, at her residence in Kensington Palace, after a short illness. Her ladyship was the third daughter of Charles second Earl Grey, by his wife, Hon. Mary Elizabeth Ponsonby, only daughter of William Brabazon, first Lord Ponsonby, and was born 30th August, 1799. She married 15th January, 1827, Captain Hon. George Barrington, R.N., son of George 5th Viscount Barrington, by whom, who died in June, 1835, she leaves surviving issue a son, Charles George Barrington of the Treasury, and formerly private secretary to Lord Palmerston, and a daughter, Mary, married to Mr. Algernon West, late private secretary to the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone. Lady Caroline had been for many years a bedchamber woman to the Queen, and on the retirement of the Dowager Lady Lyttleton was selected as governess to the royal children. A few hours after her death the melancholy intelligence was telegraphed to Her Majesty at Windsor Castle, and in the forenoon the Queen came to town by special train and visited Mr. Barrington and Mrs. A. West at Kensington Palace. Her Majesty and daughters were much affected on the receipt of the sad news, as Lady Caroline Barrington had been so long and intimately associated with them, and was regarded as one of their most faithful servants and friends. | The Essex County Standard, 30 Apr 1875

FUNERAL OF LADY BARRINGTON. — In presence of the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of Connaught, Prince Christian, and the Marquis of Lorne, the remains of the late Lady Caroline Barrington were interred in Kensal-green Cemetery on Monday, garlands and wreaths, sent by the Queen and Princesses, being placed on the coffin. | The Hampshire Advertiser, 5 May 1875
