Herman served in the US Marines and was a Private 5 when he died in Okinawa in a surprise attack by the Japanese. Herman was hit in the head by a Japanese knee mortar. He died instantly. He was 19 years old.
He was buried at the 'Punchbowl' in Honolulu, Hawaii.
