John was born on June 17, 1890 to Martin and Nellie Batts. He was born a twin but his twin brother died at birth. It isn't clear how he came to have the middle name of Raymond.

John Sr married Anna Breas on May 11, 1911 and together they had fourteen children. Pearl Jennette, Janet Pearl, John Raymond, Marvin John, Edna Harriet, Erma Jane, Emma (Erma) Jane, Phyllis Lorraine, Harriet Lois and Lillian Ann, Herman Phillip, Phillip, Robert Howard and Rae Ann.

John Sr died as a result of an automobile accident in Detroit, Michigan on August 25, 1942 at the age of 52.

Pearl was the first (born in 1911) and died as a baby in 1912. Erma Jane (born in 1920) lived just under two months. Emma (Erma) Jane (born in 1921) died just shy of her fifteenth birthday. Herman Phillip died at the age of 19 in Japan while serving in the Marine Corp during WWII.

As of today, the surviving children are Phillip (born 1927), and Rae Ann (born 1930).

John and Anna are my husbands grandparents.
