Mr. Jesse Henry Hairston, Sr., 92, of 11 Atmore Drive, Axton, Va., departed this life on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County.
He was born in Henry County, Va., a son of the late Burgess and Ruby Waller Hairston on February 8, 1921. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Moyer Hairston.
He was a World War II Army veteran and was retired from W.M. Bassett after 42 years of service.
Jesse was a member of Shiloh Way of the Cross Church where he served as a Deacon, the Adult Choir, Trustee, Baptism Ministry and was the oldest male member.
Those left to cherish his memory include three daughters, Zanderline (Lenmuel) Terry, Sr., of Richmond, Va.; Alventis (Michael) Gravely, and Doris (Robert) Dillard, both of Axton, Va.; five sons, Jesse (Yonnie) Hairston, Jr., Ronnie Hairston, Donnie (Vanessa) Hairston, and Todd Hairston, all of Axton, Va.; and Standley (Priscilla) Hairston, of Martinsville, Va.; five sisters, Lillian Eggleston, and Mable Pritchett, both of Martinsville, Va.; Thennie Dent, of Roanoke, Va.; Gertrude Cook, of Washington, DC; and Annie Ruth Hairston, of Cleveland, Ohio; four brothers, John Hairston, Joe Louis Hairston, and Harry L. Hairston, all of Axton, Va.; and Ervin Hairston, of Martinsville, Va.; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren and 1 great-great-great grandchild.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 18, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at Shiloh Way of the Cross Church with Bishop Earley Dillard, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hairston Family Cemetery in Axton, Va.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral and will be at the home at other times.
