Richard L. McKernan, Sr., 82, of Woodbryne Drive, Mountain Top, died Monday in Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Oct. 14, 1920, in Ashley, he was a son of the late Leo and Elizabeth (Gaughan) McKernan. He graduated from St. Leo's High School, Ashley. He served in U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of St. Jude's Church, Mountain Top; American Legion Post 673, Ashley; and VFW Post 283, Kingston.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mary Coyle; infant brother, Joseph; and sister, Mary Carey.

Surviving are his son, Richard L. Jr.; daughters, Mary Joan Brenholts and Karen Vamos; and five grandchildren, all of Mountaintop; and brother, John, Newtown section of Hanover Township.

Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Thursday from the Leo P. Lehman Funeral Home, 689 Hazle Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Jude's Church, with the Rev. Leo J. McKernan officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
