Mary E. Carey, of Mary Street in Ashley died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. Born Dec. 29, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Elizabeth (Gaughan) McKernan. She was a 1939 graduate of St. Leo's High School in Ashley and a graduate of Marywood College in Scranton and College Misericordia in Dallas Township. She was employed as an elementary school librarian by the Ashley and Wilkes-Barre Area school districts. She was a member of St. Leo's Church in Ashley, and the parish Rosary Group. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edison E.; and infant brother, Joseph. Surviving are her sons, John, Newtown; and Thomas, Conyngham; daughters, Ellen Bond, Tatamy; and Joan O'Boyle, Duryea; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brothers, Richard, Mountaintop; and John, Newtown, Hanover Township. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the Leo P. Lehman Funeral Home, 689 Hazle Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Leo's Church. The Mass will be concelebrated by her nephew, the Rev. Leo McKernan, and the Rev. Thomas J. O'Malley. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Hanover Township.
