Former Merced resident Mrs. Esther Katherine Smith, 77, of 407 W. Swain Road in Stockton, died at a Stockton hospital Monday after an apparent heart attack.
Born in Newton, Kan., she came to Lodi with her parents in 1907. Her father, the late Jacob Walter, operated Walter's Market at Lodi and Central avenues for many years.
She attended local schools and married Edward Bansmer in Lodi in 1918. She moved to Stockton when she married George N. Smith in August of 1941. The family has been living in Stockton ever since. Her brother Ed Walter of Lodi died in January.
She was a member of Lincoln Presbyterian Church of Stockton.
Survivors include her husband George Smith; two sons; two daughters; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
