J.H. Walters Passes Away In Hospital
Death Closes Long Career of Dean of Grocers
J.H. Walters, 85, dean of Lodi grocers, died last night at a local hospital, after illness following a stroke suffered 10 days ago.
Death came at 10:05 p.m. for the man who owned the oldest grocery store in Lodi and will be remembered as one of the city's best-known residents.
Jacob Walter came to Lodi in 1906 from Hastings, Nebraska, and settled in the Acampo area. In 1909 he moved to Lodi, to open Walter's Market at Central and Lodi avenues, which is still in operation.
Mr. Walter retired as an active participant in the business three years ago, turning it over to his son, Edward, and moving to 915 N. Pleasant st., where he resided until his death last night.
A native of Russia, the Lodian was brought to this country as a small child by his parents, the late John and Katherine Sell Walter of Lodi. He became a citizen of the United States and as a young an, worked in the dry good business in Marion, Kansas, before moving to Hastings and thence to Lodi.
Mr. Walter was the husband of the late Katherine M. Walter, who died in 1935. He is survived by three children, Edward of Lodi; Mrs. Esther K. Smith of Stockton; and Mrs. Martha C. Kepford of Stockton; and 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Three Brothers
Also surviving him are his three brothers, Fred O., of Concord; Alex A., of Lodi and Sam E. of Stockton.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Lodi Fueral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Carl F. Brost, pastor of the Ebenezer Congregational Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Lodi Cemetery.
