Edward "Ed" Walter, former merchant, dies
Retired long-time Lodi merchant Edward "Ed" Walter, 75, died yesterday morning in a local hospital following an extended illness.
Walter operated a grocery store at the corner of Central Avenue and Lodi Avenue until he retired in 1962. His father, the late Jacob H. Walter, first opened the store about 1909.
A native of Marion, Kans., he came to Acampo in 1907 and then moved to Lodi in 1909. He attended Salem School and graduated from Lodi Union High School in 1917.
During high school he helped his father at the grocery store and then joined in the business after grauduation.
He married Caroline Frey in 1921 in Lodi in the family home which remained his home until recently when they moved to 1306 W. Walnut St.
He was past president of F.&.A.M.; the Lodi Planning Commission; past rpesident of Lodi Aerie No. 848 F.O.E.; Ebenezer Congregational Church and past president of the church's mens fellowship club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, LaVonne; a sister, Mrs. Esther Smith of Stockton and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Ebenezer Congregational Church with Rev. Herbert Schaal officiating. Interment will be in Lodi Memorial Cemetery.
