Ruth "Ruthie" Smart, age 84, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2011, in her family home of 55 years. During her last days, she was able to give sweet smiles to visiting family and friends. During her final days she was comforted by her husband's soothing, tender whispers of love and encouragement. Ruth was born in Hardin, Missouri and came west to California with her parents [father] and many siblings. She was number seven of ten children. She graduated from Fowler High School, where she was head majorette. She had great legs and could strike the cutest poses. Standing "pretty" became her trademark quote in later years. Upon Fred Smart's return from WWII, he and Ruth were married and started their family. The Smart's home was a magnet for family, friends and neighbors. Rest assured there were always fresh cookies in the jar, a roast in the oven or a blanket on the front lawn ready for star gazing. She nourished the family, Fred nourished the garden. Together, they built a life that was full of love. Ruth found joy in so many things. From PTA to Scouts, working as a tour guide at Roma Winery to providing child care. Once her children were established in school, Ruthie, ventured out in the retail world working at Sears. Ruth was artistic and creative in so many ways. She could reupholster a couch, sew curtains and rearrange the furniture. One of her favorite memories was when she took a Tole Painting class. It shocked her that she could do it... and do it well! The family wishes to thank all the caregivers who've helped Ruth over the past 25 years, especially Debi Jo and Luz. Ruthie leaves behind Fred, her husband of 64 years; her children, Michael Smart and his wife Pat, Barbara Smith and her husband Patrick, and Marsha Horner and her husband Ken: her three grandchildren, Shannon Johnson, Kelly Smith and Jana Rodriguez; four great-grandchildren; and Freddie's cat, Tommy Boy. Visitation will be held at Stephens and Bean Chapel on Wednesday, August 10, 2011, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Celebration of Ruth's Life will be held at New Covenant Community Church, 1744 E. Nees in Fresno on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. Ruth will be laid to rest in a private ceremony. Remembrances in her honor maybe made to Hinds Hospice, 1616 W. Shaw Ave., Suite C-1, Fresno, Ca. 93711; or the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 150 Grand Ave., Oakland, Ca. 94612. STEPHENS & BEAN CHAPEL 202 North Teilman Avenue Fresno, California (559)268-9292
