W. John Blatt, 91, ex-Berks controller

W. John Blatt, former four-term county controller, died Monday at 12:45 a.m. in the Phoebe Berks Health Care Center, Wernersville, where he had been a patient since April 26.

Blatt, 93, a resident of Phoebe Berks Village, Wernersville, formerly of Leesport R.D. 1, Bern Township, was the husband of Esther C. (Olinger) Blatt.

A Republican, he served as county controller from 1952 to 1955 and from 1960 until his retirement in 1972.

Blatt was a justice of the peace in Bern Township for 12 years, a Bern Township auditor for 12 years and a member of the Bern Township Planning Commission for eight years.

Blatt was elected a state committeeman in May 1966 and in June of that year became the first Berks Countian to serve on the state Republican platform committee.

Born in Centre Township, he was a son of the late Franklin P. and Carrie (Althouse) Blatt.

Blatt was employed as a manager by the former Eastern States Farmers Exchange, Laureldale, now Agway Inc.

A member of Epler's United Church of Christ, Bern Township, he was a former elder, deacon, sexton and Sunday school superintendent and teacher.

He was a former superintendent of Epler's Church Cemetery Co.

Blatt was a past noble grand of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Leesport.

He was a former master of Ontelaunee Grange, near Leesport, and the Berks County Pomona Grange in 1945 and 1946.

Blatt was a past director, treasurer and secretary of the Pennsylvania Association of County Controllers.

He attended Bern Township schools.

Blatt is also survived by two sons, Warren J., Leesport, and Forest A., Centre Township.

Other survivors include two brothers, Elmer, Brecknock Township, and Arthur, Reading; and two sisters, Laura, widow of George A. Reeser, Bern Township, and Kathryn, wife of Elmer Kauffman, Mohnton.

There are also six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Epler's UCC. Burial will be private in Fairview Cemetery, Shillington. Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc., Laureldale, is in charge of arrangments.
