He was a well to do farmer in Greene co.Indiana in his early years; but later he by what I am told drank it all up. This was related also told by Mandie (Vandeventer) Crites daughter of Win.

Another ads that "I would add that I have heard this story also, from a niece of Minnie Alice Barker. Tom seemed to be quite an influential farmer, but in his later years he drank quite heavily."
