Sarah Wright, the first child and daughter of Richard Wright, Jr. and Nancy Morgan, was born in 1781 in Rowan County, NC. She and Josiah Johnson married in 1796 in Rowan County, North Carolina. They moved to Indiana Territory (Clark's Grant) in 1807.

In the spring of 1809, with brothers-in-law James Allen [husband of Delilah Wright] and Noah Fouts [husband of Jane Caroline Wright], went to Washington County and settled about two miles southwest of Salem, Indiana.

Josiah and Sarah Johnson had the following children –the first 6 were born in NC.

1. Richard, b. abt. 1795 in Rowan County, NC; m. Catherine Fouts Oct. 21, 1819 Clark County., IN
2. Ransom, b. abt. 1799; in Rowan County, NC; d. 1838; .m. Barbara Wright [daughter of Philbert Wright and Mary Sears] before 1820; she died 1832.
3. Wiley. ... b. 01/08/1801 Rowan County, NC; d. after 1860
4. Nancy Ellen, b. abt. 1803 in Rowan County, d. 09/30/1893
5. Jordon, b. 02/10/1805 Rowan County, NC;; d. 02/22/1874..
6. Josiah Tillotson,, Jr. b. abt. 1807 in Clarks Grant, IN
7. John Henry, b. abt.1809, Clark's Grant, IN; d. after 1870
8. Isaiah, b. unknown (abt. 1810, Clark's Grant, IN; d. 1812 ?
9. Clarissa, b. abt. 1811 in Clark's Grant, IN; d. aft 1880 [m. Jesse Green Feb 22, 1825 in Washington County, Indiana

SECOND MARRIAGE:

Sarah Wright Johnson appears to have been an 'oddity' for the times - After Josiah died, she did not remarry until five [5] years later. Generally, widows or widowers remarried much sooner, as some of the children were very small. It's highly likely that she was a very wealthy widow and not so inclined to remarry quickly. Sarah did not remarry until 19 March 1818 in Washington County - to Joseph F Shull and had the following three children:
Elizabeth Ann Shull ( Lyon) ,
Philip Shull
Nelson Shull

It was long believed that there was supposed to be a "pre-nuptial" type of agreement between Joseph and Sarah stating her assets from her first marriage would go to her Johnson children. I have been unable to find or confirm the existence of this document. It is interesting to note that Sarah was not included in Joseph's estate settlement even though he died three years [abt 1846] before she did.

Sarah Wright Johnson Shull died in 1849 in Vigo County, IN. Those who did the Washington County, IN cemetery book seem to think she is buried in Knox County, IN. How they came to that conclusion is unknown - presumably because that's where her last husband was buried.. However, since no site has been found for her 'resting' place OR place where Joseph Shull was buried, I have 'placed' Sarah here with first husband, until as such time her actual site is found.

Cause of death: Consumption - aka TB [tuberculosis]
