Family knowledge: BEN SMIH AKA CHARLIE JENKINS, son of Haywood & Mary Ann "Annie" Blackwell SMITH. See 1900 SC census with parents


He married first to Lil Cagle in SC and they had a son named Clyde Smith. (They stayed in SC) Ben was accused of a crime and his nephew cleared his name but he never returned home to SC. But his nephew's family and others visited them.

He eventually ended up, living in Stanley, Gaston County, NC and changed his name.... lived on a corner lot in a mill village. He also ran a store out of his house.

CHARLIE W. JENKINS

STANLEY ---Charlie W. Jenkins 409 Ridge St., died unexpectedly Sunday at 2 p.m. at his home. He was 82.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Carrie Isenhour Jenkins; three sons, Paul W., Leroy, and Frank (Note: Frank's death record says Frank Delenore) Jenkins, all of Stanley; three daughters. Mrs. Ethel Johnston of Stanley, Mrs. Virginia Eades of Black Mountain and Mrs. Linda Mills of Fort Hood, Tex; one sister;(NOTE: this sister's name is not listed but his surviving sister, at the time, would have been Lula Ann Smith who married Alfred Calhoun Alman. She was b.in Greenville, SC and lived at Rt. 9, Spartanburg SC ) and 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Craig Memorial Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Darrell Cox and the Rev. Cecil Ballard. Burial will be in Hillcrest Gardens.

The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services. Friends will be received tonight, 7 to 9 o' clock, at Carothers Funeral Home, Stanley.

(Note: Little Ben died in 65)
