Mr. Halliwill was recognized as long-time citizen of Medina county, where he has passed practically his entire life, the family having been one of prominence in the community from the early pioneer epoch to the present time. He was a man of public spirit and progressiveness who was always found on the right side of every moral issue, his influence being felt as a definite factor in the community when movements for the public good were involved. Chauncey was reared under the parental roof and secured his education in the primitive schools of that early day. He was early inured to the labors of farming, which in those pioneer days meant the clearing of the land and the cultivation of the same under conditions which would in the present day be considered almost impossible.

Chauncey was among the ranks of the brave boys in blue who went forth in defense of the nation's integrity during the dark and stormy epoch of the Civil war. During which time, he demonstrated love of his country by enlisting in the one-hundred-day service, joining Company D. One Hundred and Sixty-six Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The subject earned for himself an enviable reputation as a careful and progressive agriculturist, always known for his prompt and honorable methods of dealing, and thus he has the unbounded confidence of his fellow men. Chauncey C. Hollowell (Halliwill), a veteran of the Civil War, enlisted as a Private on 2 May 1864 at the age of 18, enlisted in Company D, 166th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 15 May 1864 and Mustered out on 9 September 1864 at Camp Cleveland, Ohio. [Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio. (OH Roster) Published in 1886]. His widow, Sarah Annah Halliwill, filed for his Civil War Pension in Ohio on 7 May 1915, application number 1046908, Certificate number791343.

Chauncey departed this life on the 25th day of April 1915, and was laid to rest in the Mound Hill cemetery, where his wife, Sarah Annah, sleeps by his side awaiting the resurrection of the just. The couple were childless, and loved by all who knew them.

His death was filed in the Ohio Bureau of Vital Statistics as Chauncey Curtis HALLIWELL, retired farmer, white married male, born 2 September 1845 in Guilford Township, Medina County Ohio, the son of James M. Halliwill and Mary Ann Lindsley. He died as the result of Uremic poisioning (18 mo duration) on 25 Apr 1915, in Seville, Medina County, Ohio at the age of 69 years, 7 months and 23 days. He had been treated by doctor Dawson of Sterling from 1 January 1914 and was last seen by the said doctor on the day of his death. His death certificate lists the contributing cause of death as Nephritis (Brights Disease) with an onset of two years. Volume 1631, Certificate 23875, Informant - Mrs. Annah Halliwill, Seville, Ohio.

Chauncey Curtis Halliwill was laid to rest at Mound Hill Cemetery on 27 April 1915. The plot is located north and slightly east of mound, near a young (2001) tree. A beautiful large black granite monument marks the couple's final resting place. Inscribed as follows: HALLIWILL | Chauncey | 1845-1915 | Annah | 1851-1936.
