James M. Halliwill was the second born child of George and Jemimah (nee Matthews) Halliwill, Jr., was born in "Chippeway", now known as Doylestown, Ohio.

He descended from English antecedents and inherited the sturdy qualities which made the representatives of that nationality such a desirable element of our great American population. James grew into manhood on the Guilford township farm which he helped clear. And although his chances to receive an education in the old ax-hewn one-roomed school houses of that remote period were indeed limited, he made the most of every advantage and became in after years a well informed man, who was an influential father. His parents were well known as residents of Guilford Township in Medina County, Ohio prior to 3 November 1824.

George Jr. and his wife Jemimah purchased their family homestead in Guilford township on 6 February 1837. Here they followed their agricultural pursuit and farmed this land successfully using the methods prevailing at that early time and lived the quiet lives usual to people in sparsely settled neighborhoods and were finally gathered to the Father without blame or reproach. On 15 July 1837, George sold thirty-four acres of the said tract for three hundred dollars to Oliver Houghton. Fifteen year later, Oliver's step-daughter Mary Ann Lindsley (whom he raised from age one) married George's son, James M. Halliwell.

George and Jemimah purchased additional acreage on 2 June 1838. The family home and fifty-eight acres of the original tract was "sold" to sons Abraham, James M. and Edward D. on 2 November 1869. [Medina County Deed Book 27, p271.] James M. purchased his brother Edward's share on 16 May 1874 for six hundred dollars. [Medina County Deed Book 33, p85.] James was depicted as the owner of the said on the Medina County Atlas of 1874. His mother, Jemimah then age 72, was listed within his household as the assistant keeper of house on the July 1870 federal census as were his widowed sister Amanda Lance and five of her young daughters. James retained this said residence for many years where he continued the painstaking and careful regard for his mother's comfort through her widowed years, as well as nurturing his wife, Mary Ann, and their children. James later relinquished active farm work and sold the fifty-eight acre homestead (within one year after his mothers death) on 31 March 1877 to Michael Emigh [Medina County, Ohio Deed Book 35, p356].

Numerous Guilford township transactions are recorded in the Medina County deed books on behalf of James, prior to his removal to the Westfield township. After the 1896 death of his beloved wife, to whom he was married fifty-four years, he resided with his first born son and daughter-in-law, Chauncey and Sarah. James remained in this said household until his death, which occurred on 9 Jan 1901.

James purchased his family cemetery plot, which consisted of five lots in Mound Hill Cemetery on 8 Jan 1896. The lots are located in Southwest Section 2, Row 4, Lot 566. The original marker was replaced with a beautiful Grey roll of granite on a pedestal, which was installed in 1934, per the request of their son, George B. dec'd, (as depicted in his Last Will and Testament.) This replacement stone was removed from the final resting place of Floyd C. Halliwill (the son of George B.), which was been replaced with triple monument. Mary "Elizabeth" Cramer-Halliwill added a new inscription and Floyd's inscription appears on the underside. Inscription dates as acquired directly from monument read: James M. Halliwill 1821-1902 (1820-1901); Mary Ann Linley 1826-1896 (Lindsley.)

ESTATE -- Original documents are housed within the Medina County Probate Court, Case Number 6031, James M. Halliwill, Will, Filed January 24th. 1901.
