Amandis purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land in Emmet county, Michigan through the Traverse City, Michigan Bureau of Land Management on 5 April 1878. The family did not relocate immediatley, as they were enumerated on the 1880 US Census in Montville Twp., Medina Co., Ohio. Recorded 11 June 1880, p378B, lines 4-7. Derhammer owned a farm of 78 acres in Section 15 of Carp Lake township, at the junction of East Gill and Reed Roads. The farm was valued at $300 and their post office was Carp Lake P.O. This land is at the western edge of the hamlet of Carp Lake, less than one-half of a mile from the shores of Carp Lake (currently known as Paradise Lake). Also, the GR & I (Grand Rapids & Indiana Railway) ran through the property on the route from Petoskey to Mackinaw City. If there were a railroad station at Carp Lake, it would have been very close to the property.
