Rosa was the daughter of Benjamin A. & Harriette Center Ross. She was born and raised in Glassy Mountain Township, Greenville County, SC.

Rosa's father, Ben Ross, was murdered while 11-year-old Rosa lay by his side on the floor in front of the fire in their home on Glassy Mountain on February 2, 1888. He was shot through the window.

Rosa married George Washington Farmer on Christmas Eve 1898.

Rosa & George had 12 children, including three sets of twins.
