Researching Pauline Jaskowiak’s life has been challenging. Surname spellings changed from census to census, likely due in part to zero years of education listed for Pauline, her father and oldest brother Peter in the 1900 census (younger siblings completed 6 grades). Multiple marriages due to spouse deaths added to the challenge but what follows is the most likely overview of Pauline’s life.

Contrary to her gravestone inscription, records from Komorowo Parish, Klecko, Gniezno, Wielkopolskie, Poland (24 miles northeast of Poznan) show Apolonia (Pauline) was born during 1881 to Stanislaus Jaœkowiak and Bronis³awa Graczyk. Their first child, Cecelie, was born the same year and died during 1882 in the same parish (only years are listed online, not specific dates). The June 1900 census for Culdrum Township, Morrison County, MN, cites Pauline’s birth month as Nov. 1881 in Poland, the only child of this family who immigrated to the United States with her mother, reaching the Port of Baltimore, MD, on Sept. 3, 1884. Her father came earlier. Presumably, the family moved directly to Culdrum where other Poles from the same area northeast of Poznan had already settled; for examples, Martin Super (Superczynski), his wife Apolonia, her brother Joseph Golebiewski and family, and Martin’s younger brother Valentine “Alex” Super.

Stanislaus and seven children, all but Pauline born in MN, are listed in the June 1895 MN Culdrum census along with his Graczyk father and mother-in-law in their mid-70s. His first wife Bronislawa (Bernice) died on Jan. 31, 1895, in Culdrum, and was buried in the Sobieski cemetery, as Flensburg did not yet have a church and cemetery. The 1895 census states Stanislaus (Stanley) had been in MN and the Culdrum enumeration distinct for 12 years, or since 1883. However, careful scanning of the entire Culdrum census for 1885 did not reveal any name vaguely similar to Jaskowiak (misspellings were common). The census taker may simply have missed them.

Stanislaus married Veronica (Verowea) “Verna” Ostrowski, born in Poland during April 1878, later during 1895 given the many children to care for. Widows and widowers with several children commonly married soon after an early death of their spouse as a practical and economic necessity. The June 1900 census shows they had been married five years. Stanley and Verna had several children.

Pauline was no longer in Culdrum during the 1905 MN census. She was mentioned in a Feb. 1907 Little Falls Herald article as working at the Grand Central Hotel in St. Cloud where she was listed as a cook in the 1910 census. Thereafter, her whereabouts are uncertain for a time.

The online image of an original marriage record dated May 24, 1919, lists widow Pauline Eldridge, age 34 and born in Buffalo, NY (error), then residing in Glendive, Dawson County, MT, marrying widower Ralph L. Hartwell 52, residence Helena, MT. Pauline’s parents are listed as Stanley Jaskoviak and Helen Gratzek. Pauline’s brother Jacob was living in Glendive during June 1917 (draft registration) and his brother Steve was also there in the Jan. 1920 census after serving in World War I. Both single brothers were living with Pauline’s sister Victoria and her husband Joseph Duscher in that census. Given her relatives being in Glendive, and parents’ names, it seems certain that Pauline Eldridge was their sister.

Any record of the earlier marriage record of Pauline Jaskowiak (later spelled Jaskoviak) to anyone named Eldridge remains unfound. A possibility is some mix-up in the records of the Aug 21, 1918, marriage in Helena, MT, of divorced Harry (aka Harvey) Eldridge, age 40, who married Pauline Barbara Jacobi, age 29 (so born about 1889), born in Buffalo, NY. Her parents were listed as John Jacobi and Mary Cozier and it was her first marriage. The marriage was very brief as Harry was murdered on October 17, 1918, in Helena when some unknown person fractured his skull and robbed him after they left a bar. A lengthy article in the Oct. 20, 1918, issue of the Helena Independent Record newspaper discusses the event. Unfortunately, nothing was said about his new wife.

Searching census and other records for John, Mary and Pauline Barbara Jacobi has yet to result in any findings, casting doubt on the marriage record information. Harry was previously married to Grace Jeanette Porter in Minneapolis during 1904, and they and their son lived in North Dakota during the 1910 census. It is equally likely that Pauline married some other Eldridge and no record has been found. Online MN and MT marriage records do not show Pauline’s first marriage to an Eldridge surname or anyone else.

Ralph L Hartwell and wife Pauline were living in Helena, MT, during the 1920 census and are cited in Helena City Directories until at least 1931. Ralph retired during June 1933 after 36 years as a locomotive engineer for the Great Northern Railroad Company. Sometime after the couple moved to Flathead County, MT, where Ralph died on Aug. 29, 1938.

An online image of a Nov. 9, 1939 original marriage certificate from Coram, Flathead County, MT, shows divorced Raymond B. McWilliams, age 57, born in Hinsdale, Cattaraugus County, NY, marrying Pauline B. Hartwell age 54, born in Buffalo, NY (incorrect). Her parents are listed as Stanley Jaskoviak (correct) and Bernice Gratzek, similar to the correct Graczyk spelling The May 3, 1940 census has the couple farming in Jocko Township, Flathead County, MT.

The MT death index shows Pauline died on April 26, 1964, in Kalispell, MT, at age 79. She was actually 82 using her Polish birth record, but dates of birth and age were less important in those times compared with current society. Errors of a few years were common in census and other records.

There is no evidence that Pauline ever had any children.

Pauline lived on Foothills Road near Kalispell, Montana with Ray. As a grade school child, Jim Heim knew Ray & Pauline McWilliams as a neighbor to the adjacent 40 acre Oscar Heim farm to the West.
