He was a son of John Adkins and Lucy Plumley. He married (1) Docia Adkins, they had two children; Elizabeth Adkins and Aaron Dawson Adkins. He married (2) Elizabeth "Betty" Burns, they had 12 children. He lived on Big Laurel Road (Hager, WV) in Lincoln Co. WV, at the time of his death.

Note: The reason James is not buried beside his wife Elizabeth in the Walker Adkins Cemetery is that the cemetery was not there when he died.
