Obituary from the Shreveport Times newspaper, Mar. 15, 1984, Thursday, p. 16-A:

SHREVEPORT – Services for Mr. Newt Messina, 64, of Shreveport, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday March 15 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Murray Clayton, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Rosary: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday March 14 at Rose-Neath's Marshall Street Chapel.

Mr. Messina, the owner and operator of Newt's Po Boy, died at 9:05 p.m. Tuesday March 13, 1984, at Schumpert Medical Center after a short illness. He was born in Thibodaux, La. and had been a lifelong resident of Shreveport. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Club No. 122 of Shreveport, the American Legion and the 40 & 8. Mr. Messina was a Special Police Officer for the City of Shreveport and a Special Deputy of Ward 4.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Messina of Shreveport; three daughters, Mary Ann Wagner of Key West, Fla., Jeanne Johnson and Sophia Humphrey, of Shreveport; three brothers, Joe Messina and Frank Messina, of Shreveport, Vince Messina of Baton Rouge, La.; four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers: Dr. Eugene Harbor, Gersh Marcus, Joe Cascio, Johnny Gulla, Chief Dallas W. Greene and Chief Dan Cotton.
