Rev. Dr. Samuel W. Lynd was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1796, a son of the late James William and Catharine Keyser Lynd.

Samuel was baptized by Rev. Dr. William Staughton in 1820. From 1821 - 1824, he was pastor of the Bordentown Baptist Church in Bordentown, NJ. In 1823, he married Dr. Staughton's eldest daughter, Leonora Maria. After their marriage, Samuel and Leonora conducted a school for young ladies in Baltimore. In January, 1824, Dr. Lynd became pastor of the Navy Yard Baptist Church in Washington, DC. In 1830, he and his family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio.

In Cincinnati, Dr. Lynd was pastor for several churches and also became prominent in the educational work of his day, being among eight Cincinnati Baptist men who in 1835 purchased 370 acres of land in Covington, KY for the Western Baptist Institute. The school was begun in 1845. The first faculty listed shows: "Rev. S.W. Lynd, D.D. President and Professor of Systematic and Pastoral Theology." In 1853, he retired to a farm in Lockport, IL but not long afterward he became pastor of the Fourth Baptist Church in Chicago, IL. In 1855 Dr. Lynd served as Moderator of the General Association of Baptists of Kentucky which met in Louisville that year. Dr. Lynd also served as pastor of the Mt. Auburn Baptist Church in Cincinnati before returning to his Lockport, IL farm, where he died June 17, 1876.

Dr. Lynd and his father-in-law, Dr. William Staughton, were close friends and colleagues in their religious endeavors. After the death of Dr. Staughton in 1829, Dr. Lynd wrote a biography of his old friend, entitled "A Memoir of the Rev. William Staughton", which was published in 1834.

There were ten children born to Dr. and Mrs.Lynd, with two predeceasing their father: James William Lynd, killed in an Indian uprising in Minnesota in 1862, and Dr. Charles A. Lynd, who died in 1871, a victim of tuberculosis.

Dr. Lynd was survived by his wife, Leonora and four sons: Dr. Robert Ralston Lynd, Captain George Martin Lynd of Lockport, Samuel Staughton Lynd, and Elijah W. Lynd, both of Cincinnati; four daughters, Mary Staughton Lynd Burnet, Catharine Lynd Snow, both of Cincinnati; Leonora Maria Lynd Lull of Lockport, IL; and Elizabeth Lynd Robins.

Dr. Lynd was buried in Lockport Cemetery, Lockport, IL.
