Mary Alice Cuppett

At noon on Friday, July 7, while the two little girls of Mr. and Mrs. Will Carleton Cuppett were playing in an open wagon shed at their place of residence near New Paris, the younger one, "Little Mary" as she was usually addressed, aged one year, ten months, and nine days old, was instantly killed by a horse running over her. ...

A team was left by Mr. Cuppett to go from a hay field to the barn alone, he walking a short distance in the rear. When it arrived near the shed, the team separated, one going above the shed where accustomed to go, the other starting through the shed. The older little girl made an alarm by screaming, but before Mr. Cuppett reached the shed the animal forced its way between a wagon box and a spring wagon. The older girl was standing on the side step of the wagon and the younger one was on the ground in the path where the horse passed through.

The funeral which occurred on Saturday afternoon was conducted by Rev. John Winwood, in the Reformed Church at New Paris. A large concourse of relatives and friends attended the service. The little form was borne to its resting place in the Reformed Cemetery by the following young ladies: Sara Winwood, Hazel Richards, Catharine Seese, and Corine Shoenthal.

There are surviving a brother, Boyce, the oldest of the children, and a sister, Ruth. The parents have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad affliction.

Mary Alice's grandfather, John Albert Cuppett, wrote her obituary as evidenced by his characteristic Bedford Gazette sign-off, "CAJ." -- MKeaton
