Doris was sixth of seven children born to James Henry and Annie Bell (Caraway) Baker. She married John William Mares in 1947 and they were the parents of three children: John Charles, Joe Henry and Cynthia Paige 'Sissy'.

She was born Sept. 23, 1926, in Smiley to the late Henry and Ann Carway Baker. She was a school cook and a member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, Cistern. She also was a member of KJZT and the church's altar society.
Survivors: husband, John W. Mares of Flatonia; daughter, Sissy Mares of Flatonia; sons, John Charles Mares of Victoria and Joe Mares of Victoria; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Preceded in death by: four sisters and two brothers.
A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, Cistern.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the church, the Rev. Joseph Hybner officiating.
Burial will follow at Cistern Catholic Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home, Flatonia, 361-865-3311.
Memorials: St. Joseph High School Endowment Fund or Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, Cistern.
