Last Rites Held Today For David L. Childers
David Lemuel Childers, 73, well known pioneer resident of the community died at his home on Monday afternoon from a heart ailment. Thought the deceased had been confined to his home for the past two months, because of ill health, his death came as a shock to his many relatives and friends.
Final rites will be held from the Methodist church today at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Ralph C. Steele officiating. Burial will be in the local cemetery and pallbearers will be his nephews, Owen Childers, George Childers, Stuart Schaefer, Alvin Schaefer, Fred C. Childers and Frank Childers. Honorary pallbearers will be William Trezona , Josiah Cock, Mel Odgers and Jack Seraphine.
David Childers, the son of Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Childers, was born in Saginaw, Mich., on Dec 1, 1875, and with the family moved to Tower when a young boy. He attended Tower and Soudan schools and came to Ely as a young man. For 40 years, until his retirement several years ago, he had been employed as an office clerk by the Oliver Iron Mining Company.
Dave, as he was more familiarly known to his host of friends, was always interested in the civic affairs of the community, serving as alderman at one time and for many years had been a member of the Ely Fire department.
Surviving besides his widow are five daughters, Mrs. Richard S. Deeren, Mrs. Gordon R. Closway, and Mrs, Rolland J. Duff, all of Winona, Minn.; Mrs. Volney O. Riser, Little Rock, Ark., and Mrs. Francis Weeks, Harrisville, New York; one son, David Childers, Kerkhoven, Minn.; two sisters, Mrs. James Hodgon, Ely, and Mrs. R.J. Whiteside, Duluth; one brother, Fred S. Childers, and several grandchildren.
