Lela Audean Neal was the third child born to Leroy Dee and Myrtle Kariker on July 14, 1914. Lela was educated in the Maple Grove School northeast of Winfield, Kansas and worked in housekeeping as a young woman. On June 9, 1935, she was united in marriage to William "Bill" Sawyer. They lived and farmed many years in the Winfield, Kansas vicinity. She was employed as a nurse aide at William Newton Memorial Hospital and private duty nursing until retirement in the mid-1960's. Her interests were her large family, camping, fishing and card games. She will be fondly remembered as an avid fan of John Wayne and Elvis Presley.
