Alfred Raymond "Ray" LaFave, 76, of 58 Sunset Ave, Tupper Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000 at his home. Born December 10, 1923 in Tupper Lake, he was the son of Basil and Clementine (Scanlon) LaFave. He attended Holy Ghost Academy. Mr. LaFave and the former Beatrice King were married on January 24, 1942 at Holy Name Church in Tupper Lake. Mrs. LaFave died in Aug. of 1999. Mrs. LaFave joined the U.S. Army in 1943. He served in the U.S. and in the Asiatic and Pacific Theaters and was honorably discharged from active duty in 1945. He continued in the U.S. Army reserves and was honorably discharged in 1951. Mr. LaFave worked for many years as a heavy equipment operator for the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 106. He worked around New York State on various road projects and building sites, such as the Beekmantown and Saranac Lake High Schools. He retired in 1966. He was an avid bowler, and member of many bowling leagues. Survivors include two sons and their wives, Bruce and Perlita LaFave of Virginia Beach, VA, and Randy and Devin LaFave of Tupper Lake; two daughters, Karen Coffman and her husband Jerry, and Wendy LaFave, both of Tupper Lake; one sister, Lorraine Dagget of Tupper Lake: 17 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Gene "Barrel" LaFave, two sisters, Lavina Ashline and Theresa Bombard, and six brothers, Harley "Buster", Oliver "Budd", Francis, Gideon; Hector; and Joseph LaFave. Calling hours for Mr. LaFave were held on Friday, Dec. 8 at the Richer Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. A funeral Mass was held Saturday, Dec. 9th at 12 noon at St. Alphonsus Church with Fr. Donald Kramberg officiating. Burial with military honors will be at St. Alphonsus Cemetery in May. Those wishing to make memorial contributions in Mr. LaFave's name are asked to consider Holy Ghost Academy or High Peaks Hospice.
