Robert was the son of William Sr and Esther (Cushing) Gilbert, his parents were Alaskan. Robert lived with his family in Unga Village and Squaw Harbor, Unga Island, Shumagin Islands, Alaska. He was a commerical fisherman. Robert moved to Sand Point, Popof Island and lived there with his parents in a home over the waterfront in an area called "Little Sanak".

Robert is interred in the Squaw Harbor "Down the Point" Cemetery on Unga Island.
