Ralph Sumners, 83, Avon, passed away March 6, 2005. He was born July 17, 1921 in Dongola, Indiana, in Gibson County. He was the son of the late Ralph Sumners, Sr. and Esther (Thurman) Sumners. Ralph is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Sophia (Gentry). Other survivors include his five children, Clarissa Snapp, Indianapolis, Jane and Jim Ley, Indianapolis, Mark Sumners, d'Iberville, Mississippi, Gail Husk, Avon, and Beth Sumners, Indianapolis; seven grandsons and two granddaughters, Jason, Sarah and Lucas Sumners, Laura and David Snapp, Matthew Ley, Christopher and Brett Husk, and Tyler Summerhill; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Lou Vaughan, Petersburg, Indiana, Amye Rue Martin, Oakland City, Indiana, Martha Newcomb, Huntsville, Indiana, Georgia Price, Petersburg, Indiana; and 23 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother, Curtis Sumners, and sister, Ruth Hougland. Mr. Sumners served four years in the Asiatic Pacific, during World War II as a heavy anti-aircraft gun crewman of the Sixth Division of the United States Marine Corps. He participated in the ceremony at the surrender of the Japanese military forces in China on October 25, 1945. Ralph retired after 32 years of service as a supervisor and job foreman at the Allison, Speedway Plant 3 Division of General Motors. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 9 at the First Baptist Church, Plainfield, with calling at the church beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 8 at Conkle Funeral Home Avon Chapel. Ralph graduated from Oakland City High School in 1940, where he was all-conference in football. He was a charter member of the Gibson County Genealogical Society, charter member of DeWitt Illinois Genealogical Society, member of the Indiana Historical Society and the Society of Indiana Pioneers. He coached Avon Little League baseball and was a Cubmaster for Avon Boy Scout Pack 306. He and Sophia have been members of the First Baptist Church for over 45 years. Ralph's favorite times were making homemade ice cream for his family, gardening and bird watching. His love of his country was steadfast and had a lasting impact on his children and grandchildren.
