John M. Schmitz, 89, of 25 N. State St., Chilton died at Holy Family Hospital in Manitowoc after a lengthy illness.

He was born at St. Anna on Sept. 24, 1882, son of the late Nicholas and Theresa Ruhland Schmitz. Mr. Schmitz farmed in the town of Brothertown until his retirement in 1965. On June 7, 1910, he married Minnie Dorn at St. Ann Catholic Church. She died in 1969.

Mr. Schmitz was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Chilton and its Holy Name Society.

Survivors are four sons, Donald and Robert, Chilton, John Jr., R. 3, Chilton, and Edward, New Berlin; three daughters, Mr. John (Ruth) Grenzer, R. 1, Chilton, Mrs. Mark (Betty) O’Donnell, Elsie, Mich., and Mrs. William (Lorrie) Lintner, North Canton, Ohio; 29 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; three sisters, Mr. Rudolph Freund, Oshkosh, and Mrs. Anton Schiller, Marytown and Mrs. George Wick, Sheboygan.

He was preceded in death by a son, daughter, seven brothers and three sisters.

The funeral Mass was at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chilton, with the Rev. Frederick Dorn, SDS celebrant,. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
