Erie -
Howard G. Yarnell, 87, a lifelong farmer and stockman of rural Erie, died at 5:55 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at Labette County Medical Center, where he entered Dec. 3. He had been in failing health for the past 16 months.
He was born May 28, 1911, on the family farm southwest of Erie to Perry and Lillie (Smith) Yarnell. He grew up and attended rural schools in Erie. He started farming as a young man.
He attended the Temple Baptist Church in Erie, which he helped to build.
He served on the church board, rural school boards and the Dutton Levy board.
He married Mary Alice Gough on Jan. 25, 1934, in Oswego. She died Feb. 1, 1974.
Survivors include a son, Donnie of rural Erie; a daughter, Martha Yarnell of rural Erie; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two brothers, Leon of Erie and Eugene of Butler, Mo.; and four sisters, Glenda Reeves of Pittsburg, Susie McDermed, Lucy Tredway, both of Erie, and Nona Sanders of Parsons.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Howard Dean; a son Melvin, who died Aug. 23, 1971; and by two brothers and three sisters.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Temple Baptist Church in Erie with the Rev. Bill Bingham officiating. Burial will be in the East Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie.
