ERIE — Susie Mae McDermed, 88, of Erie died early Thursday morning, April 10, 2014, in Erie.
She was born Aug. 1, 1925, the ninth child of Perry and Lillian (Smith) Yarnell. She attended Erie High School. She was a resident of Neosho County her entire life.
On Jan. 11, 1947, she married Raymond McDermed in Girard. Following their marriage they purchased a farm near Erie and lived there 40 years. Raymond preceded her in death on July 7, 2003.
Susie was a member of the First Christian Church of Erie and was a more than 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was known for her wonderful cooking and for being a beautiful seamstress. Her crafts, garments and paintings have been shared by many. She also became a certified medication aide and worked at Arkhaven in Erie for 22 years. She loved living the past 10 years at Guest Home Estates with the staff and residents.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Bob Stegman, Dee Ann and Steve Stevens, all of Erie, and Jane and Rick Tucker of Parsons; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Nona Sanders, Lucy Tredway, both of Erie, and Glenda Reeves of Pittsburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Raymond; brothers, Howard, Virgil, Lloyd, Leon and Eugene Yarnell; and sisters, Gladys Ritz, Letha Bohrer and infant Edna Eudora.
The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Sunday and the family will receive friends there from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday.
