Newphrey M. Check, 88, of 1324 S. 24th St., Manitowoc, died unexpectedly Sunday evening, Sept. 9, 1990 at Holy Family Medical Center, Manitowoc.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am Wednesday at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and 11 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Roman Zbjeranski and burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

He was born May 30, 1902 at Custer, Wis., son of the late Charles and Elizabeth Kirschling Check. He attended schools in Polonia, Wis. He came to Manitowoc in 1919. He owned and operated Check Construction Company, retiring in 1964. During that time he was an active member of the Master Builders Association. He was married to Clara Andrastek on Oct. 21, 1924 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death Feb. 25, 1989. He was a member of the Manitowoc Lions Club. He was a 4th Degree member Knights of Columbus Council 710. He was a member of the United Commercial Travelers, Eagles Club and the Elks Club. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Park View Haven Apartments. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic church where he had been active with the church's young men's club and also served as an usher.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Esther and Siegfried Tittl, Loretta and Wallace Norkosky, Barbara and Robert Jameson, all of Manitowoc; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Charles and Helen Check of Manitowoc, Edward and Grace Check of Manitowoc, Leonard Check of Custer, Anna check and Sally Check both of Manitowoc; five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Regina Spitza of Milwaukee, Sarah Spitza of Milwaukee, Tillie and Stanley Blarek of Brokaw, Wis., Bernice and Chester Bembenek of Stevens Point and Theresa Thrun of Custer and Leonard Cherek of Milwaukee; 12 grandchildr3en, Susan D'Angelo, Mary Terens, John, Thomas and Mark Tittl, Wallace Norkosky Jr., James Norkosky, Allan Norkosky, Nancy Gunderson, Gregory, David and Theresa Jameson and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

Friends may call at Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, 4-9 pm Tuesday. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 pm led by Deacon Phillip Andrastek.
