Alexander's parents were:
Samuel Black Gass (1819 - 1873)
Mary Elizabeth Pearson Gass (1824 - 1867)

Alex's mother died in October 1867.

ON JULY 14, 1870,
Alex, age 7, lived with his father Samuel Gass, age 50, on a farm in Salt River Township, Audrain Co, MO. The farm was valued at $4700; personal estate at $4500. Alex's siblings were John, age 21; William, 20; Howard Allan, 19; David, 16; Nancy, 12; & James, 9.

His father was almost 52 years old when he married Sarah Elizabeth McGlothlin, 24, in Ray Co, MO on June 8, 1871. Sarah was 16 years older than 8 year old Alex.

Alexander, known as Alex by most, the last of Samuel & Mary's ten children, had a spirit of adventure, which compelled him to move to Montana when he was 17 years old. This would have been sometime in 1880.

Various newspaper articles over the years & Federal Census records have helped provide a brief glimpse into his life.
