Caroline was born to John Windle and Elizabeth Cocking in New York after the family immigrated to the United States from England. They later migrated to Michigan settling in Hillsdale County. Caroline married Henry Levi Dawes in Michigan. They acquired land and homesteaded in Nebraska living in a sod house as was common on the prairie. There they had six children, Leo, Chester, Alva, Newton, Alta, and Nina. They had difficulties with farming and it was decided that Henry would look elsewhere for work and send money to Carolyn. While Henry was working in Nelson, Canada, Carolyn found life hard and left her family. She remarried a Joseph Minl in 1893, and had a seventh child, a daughter, named Elizabeth (Edith).
