Edmund was born the son of Edmund Hendley Richards Jr. and Nancy Jane Warner.
Edmund was the third in the line of Richards men to bear the full "Edmund Hendley Richards" title, though he apparently went by "Hendley" during his life. A cousin, born in 1850 in Andrew County MO, was also named Edmund Hendley Richards...making four in all.

He grew up on and later farmed his father's land in North Otter township. His father, grandfather, three uncles, and several other relatives bearing the Richards, Chapman, Stewart, Adcock, and Warren names helped settle the area in the 1830s.

Edmund's marriage to Nancy Jane Adcock echoed the Richards-Adcock marriage tradition started when Edward Adcock [1801] married Agnes Richards [1810] in 1825 in Robertson County Tennessee just prior to moving north into Macoupin County IL.

Edmund and Nancy's children:
1. Letha Maud [1875] +Walter Rees
2. Minnie Dell [1877 +George W. Dorks
3. Ira Madison [1881] +Edna Cline
4. Warner C. [1897] Died following operation for appendicitis in 1915.

In the 1900 census, Carlinville Macoupin County IL, Edmund lived w/family on Pine Street and was listed as "Teamster" under occupation.
